A quiet month mostly at home. Started with the driveway clear but snowbanks to the sides. The driveway was dried out enough where it met the grid road to fill the rut from the thaw. The snow had melted low enough to walk on the paths in our woods. The pond began the month iced over but starting to melt.
The first week ended with helping with the Bethel camp clean up. This was a chance to try out the battery powered chainsaw bought on Amazon using points from Airmiles.
The Airmiles point program is migrating to Blue Points. It seemed like a good time to draw down my points balance to close to zero by buying Home Depot and Amazon gift certificates. The Amazon points went toward DeWalt batteries and a chainsaw that uses two 20 Volt DeWalt Batteries. The saw performed admirably cutting up some deadfalls during the camp clean-up. It also came in handy with cutting up the winter deadfalls across the paths in our woods.

We joined the birthday celebration for granddaughter, Sasha. Mid week two the crocuses appeared. By the end of the week the daffodils planted last fall were starting to bloom. The light snowfalls mid month didn’t seem to faze them.

Eventually the pond thawed. We had experimented with placing some scrap pieces of Styrofoam board on the surface in the fall. It may have helped the one goldfish of about twenty to survive the winter. That’s the first overwinter survivor we’ve seen in the pond over the years. Maybe we’ll try a larger area of Styrofoam panels this fall. Two goldfish that overwintered in an indoor aquarium had grown much more than the survivor goldfish even though all three had been the same size in October. They did not handle the return to the outdoor pond well.

Late in May we did a quick trip to Edmonton to pick up a few Amazon purchases. The new escape hatch hood for the Big Foot Truck camper would have been weeks shipping time to Meadow Lake versus less than one week shipping to Edmonton. On the way home we bought a few bags of small goldfish for the pond. We planted some potatoes in garbage bags as an experiment.
We ended the month with a trip to North Battleford for cataract surgery in one of Juanita’s eyes. The other eye is scheduled for the first week of June. While we were being quiet at home daughter Deborah dropped by on her return from the first ride of the season.
